Ban Thung Luang
Ban Thung Luang, in Khiri Mat District, Sukhothai Province, is renowned as the source of unglazed earthenware known for its unique beauty, quality and durability.
His Royal Highness Prince Naris in his memoir on a visit to the Circle of Phitsanulok in 1901 sain, “ On the 18th, early in the morning, Phraya Sukhothai came with 3 “Kran” pots, finely made in the folk way. They made such pots at Ban Thung Luang, to the south of western Sukhothai. Even large “Kaphung” pots, about 2 feet high, are made there too. The “Kran” pots as mentioned are ancient water jars specifically made and keep water cool better than other earthen containers. This old document indicated the fact that Ban Thung Luang had been famous handicraft community for over a century. Visitors here would be amazed at finding pots of various forms shaped by the young and old under their houses here as local wisdom inherited and continued over the century.
